Las Vegas Valley Area Guide

Las Vegas StripLocated in the Mojave Desert, the Las Vegas Valley area includes the Spring Mountains to the west, Sheep Mountains to the north, Muddy Mountains, Eldorado Range, and Lake Mead to the east, and the Black Mountains to the south. The Las Vegas Valley has the highest concentration of people in the state, and is currently the fastest growing metropolitan area in the nation. The metropolitan area consists of the cities of Las Vegas, Henderson, North Las Vegas, and Boulder City. Currently, the population of the Las Vegas Valley area is approximately two million.

Because the Las Vegas Valley lies in such a high altitude area of the Mojave Desert, the temperature changes quite drastically between seasons. Annually, the Las Vegas Valley area receives less than five inches of rain. If you are a fan of variety in weather, then the Las Vegas Valley is the place for you. During the day between June and August, temperatures often exceed 100 °F. In the late summer, particularly in July and August, monsoon season takes over and moist winds from the Gulf of California soak much of the southwestern United States. In the winter, lows are approximately around 30°F and it is common for the mountains in the surrounding areas to receive up to ten feet of snow.

The Las Vegas Valley area is driven by the tourism industry. Major attractions include casinos, shopping, fine dining, and conventions. This busy, bustling area is home to over 130,000 hotel rooms that are always filled with excited people ready to take on the city’s adventures.

History

In 1854, the Las Vegas Valley area was settled by Mormon farmers and by 1865 was the site for a U.S. Army fort, marking the beginning of a long relationship between southern Nevada and the military. Las Vegas Valley has been known as a gambling center and resort destination since the 1930s. In the 1990s, inexpensive real estate sparked a boom in the residential population of the area which has continued to grow to this day.
